Resize an image online
Drop your photos and set the size in pixels or the maximum weight in KB.
or drop them here (JPG, PNG, WebP)
Your files stay on your device: your browser processes them and nothing is sent to a server.
Resized images will appear here, with the dimensions before and after and the resulting file size.
Leave a field empty and it follows the proportions. With both, the image fits inside the box without distortion.
Resize an image online: how it works
To resize an image online, choose a mode (pixels, percentage or maximum size in KB), set the value, 1,600 pixels wide by default, then drop your photos: your browser scales each one down with its proportions intact, and the result area shows the dimensions before and after, the new file size and a Save button. A typical case: a 4,032 × 3,024 pixel phone photo of 3.5 MB becomes a 1,600 × 1,200 pixel JPG of a few hundred KB, ideal for an email. When an upload form caps files at 1 MB, the maximum size mode searches for the best quality that fits under the cap and reduces the dimensions only if it has to. One limit to know: shrinking is safe, but enlarging a small image adds no detail, which is why that option is off by default.
Upload limits on French online services
Living in France means uploading a lot of documents: proof of address for the préfecture, payslips for a rental application, a scanned ID for your bank, a photo of a medical receipt for your mutuelle (top-up health insurance). Each portal sets its own limit per file, usually shown next to the upload button, and an unchanged phone photo often exceeds it. Set the Max size mode to about 10% under the stated limit: for a 1 MB cap, enter 900 KB. The tool encodes the photo at several JPEG quality levels, halving the search range each time, and keeps the best one that fits. If even 55% quality is too heavy, it shrinks the dimensions and tries again, and the line in the result list tells you if the target could not be met.
Choosing pixels or a percentage
Pixels is the everyday setting: enter the width you want and the height follows. Enter both and the image is scaled to fit inside that box. A picture already smaller than the target is left as it is unless you allow enlarging. Percentage is handy for a batch of photos of mixed sizes that should all shrink the same way: at 50%, width and height are halved, so the image holds four times fewer pixels and the file usually shrinks in a similar proportion.
As a guide, 1,280 to 1,600 pixels wide suits email, 1,600 to 2,000 a full-width website banner, and 1,181 × 1,772 pixels a 10 × 15 cm print at 300 dots per inch. A WebP output is lighter still for a website, while JPG remains the safe choice for any form.
Sharp results and private files
Shrinking a 4,000-pixel photo to 800 pixels in one step creates jagged edges and moiré on fine patterns. The tool halves the image repeatedly with the browser's highest smoothing setting, then makes the last step to the exact size, so the result stays clean. Files are processed one at a time to spare memory, the orientation recorded by the phone is applied, and metadata such as GPS position is not copied, so the resized photo no longer reveals where it was taken. Nothing is uploaded.
To change the format without touching the size, use PNG to JPG or, for iPhone pictures, HEIC to JPG.
Frequently asked questions
A French government portal rejects my photo for being over 1 MB, what should I do?
Pick the Max size (KB) mode, enter about 900 KB to keep a margin, then drop the photo. The tool looks for the best JPEG quality that fits under that size and only shrinks the dimensions if quality alone is not enough. The final size is shown before you save it. A phone photo of several megabytes usually ends up well under 1 MB and still perfectly readable.
Can I shrink a photo without it turning blurry?
Yes, as long as the new size matches how the picture will be viewed. A photo reduced to 1,600 pixels wide stays sharp on a laptop screen and weighs far less. Blur comes from enlarging a picture that is too small, or from pushing JPEG quality very low. When you need a lighter file, cut the dimensions first and keep quality above 70%.
Why do other resizers stretch my photos when this one does not?
A picture gets distorted when both a width and a height are forced without respecting its original ratio. Here the proportions are always kept: if you enter both values, the image is scaled down to fit inside that box, with no stretching and no cropping. If you need an exact shape such as a square, crop the image first and resize it afterwards.
What pixel width works for a website image or an email attachment?
For a full-width website banner, 1,600 to 2,000 pixels wide is plenty, around 150 to 400 KB as JPEG. For an image inside an article, 1,000 to 1,200 pixels. For email, 1,280 to 1,600 pixels wide lets the recipient view the photo comfortably without filling their inbox. A recent phone photo is often 4,000 pixels wide, far more than any of these uses need.
Does the maximum size mode work with PNG files?
Not as PNG output. PNG is lossless, so its size depends on the content and cannot be tuned with a quality setting. The maximum size mode therefore produces a JPEG, or a WebP if you choose it, and transparent areas receive the background colour you pick. To keep a lighter PNG with its transparency, reduce its width and height in pixels instead.
